The pedal-powered coffee shops taking on the world

wheely pedal-powered coffee shop

A global network of pedal-powered coffee shops aims to take on the caffeine-powered leviathan that is Starbucks.

Wheelys last year sold its pedal-powered café trikes to 45 countries, which means it’s growing faster than any chain that has come before. The business works on a franchise model; each café trike costs around £3,000.

According to Wheelys, “A lot of big corporations are panicking these days. ‘Whoa, people want ecological thinking? Well, let’s….eh…run our diesel engines on palm oil! And print our corporate environment policy on that brownish paper! Wheelys is different. From the day we started Wheelys, we have been serving organic, vegetarian food from cafés that run on the energy from your body and the sun only.”

Wheelys cafés are powered by leg power, solar energy and the wind; each trike boasts a windmill to power its lights. On top of that, each trike recycles all its coffee residue; grounds are pressed into small soil cubes and packed with flower seeds, which the baristas plant on their way to work.

It’s a pity you’re not offering one of these up as a prize!
