The electric bicycle of the future is…a penny farthing
September 3, 2009
You may be old enough to remember both the fanfare that accompanied the launch of the Sinclair C5 – an electric vehicle boasting cutting-edge technology that, we were told, would do away with the need for cars – and its descent to popular object of ridicule.
More recently, the American Segway electric stand-up scooter made much the same promise, but looks likely to finish its days as spectacular a commercial disaster as its British predecessor.
Both designs appeared to not take into account their cheaper, faster, greener and greatly more efficient rival – the bicycle. So will a folding, electric version of the penny farthing fare any better?
The Yikebike electric penny farthing
The Yikebike folding electric penny farthing is clearly well thought through in many respects; it folds easily to a tiny size, weighs little (around 10kg) and has good-quality lights incorporated into the design.
The riding position appears a little eccentric, but it has been designed with stability and safety in mind. The shorter wheel-base makes it very maneuverable, the front wheel is a decent size for bumps and curbs, the upright riding position makes it easier to see and be seen in traffic and handle-bars are no longer a hazard in an accident.
The Yikebike will be available as in pedal-assist or electric-only versions. The prices have yet to be finalised.

A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) said: “It’s a fascinating design and crucially it is not looking to compete with traditional bikes, it’s simply an electric bike that is portable, lightweight, compact, practical and fun. However, its success will depend on its price and public acceptance of its unusual looks.”
