Breakdown cover for your EV

When the ETA launched in 1990, with the exception of milk floats, electric vehicles (EVs) were a rare sight on UK roads.

Fast forward to today, and the number of fully electric cars on our roads has skyrocketed to over 1,100,000 - a testament to how far technology, and attitudes, have come. With EVs now an increasingly common sight, supporting their needs has become a crucial aspect of the breakdown recovery service we offer.

Electric cars, vans, and motorbikes bring a fresh set of challenges. At ETA, we’ve adapted to this change by ensuring our breakdown cover is as innovative as the vehicles we support. Our approach is simple, but effective: We handpick the best local specialist mechanics and garages across Britain to provide efficient, environmentally friendly assistance.

How EV breakdown recovery works

One of the most common questions we encounter is whether recovering an EV differs from dealing with a petrol or diesel vehicle. According to our mechanics, the process is largely the same. “They’re essentially four wheels on the ground,” explains a team member. “We can attach winches, or in some cases, they can be driven up and taken to where they need to go.”

If you're old enough to remember these on UK roads, you'll know how EVs have changed over recent decades

That said, EVs come with a few quirks. The most notable is their battery system, which requires special care. When attending to an electric vehicle, our recovery teams often use infrared temperature sensors to check for any overheating. Once these checks confirm the battery’s integrity, the vehicle can be safely transported.

Understanding EV breakdowns

While EVs are generally reliable, breakdowns do occur, often due to a depleted battery. This can happen for various reasons, including cold temperatures and high winds, which can drain power faster than expected. As drivers spend more time with their EVs, they become familiar with all the factors that affect affecting range and learn to plan better. And for those occasions when a vehicle does run out of charge, our breakdown teams are there to help.
