Towing with a bicycle: Boats, caravans and cars

Our own successful attempt last week to pull a caravan with a bicycle prompted us to ponder the limits of what a bicycle is capable of towing.

The QTvan is a miniature caravan designed specifically to be towed by a bicycle, but many other heavy objects such as jet skis, sailing dinghies and even cars have been pulled by bicycles with varying degrees of success.

Bicycles stronger than people think

Few people realise just how strong a bicycle can be. And if the idea of towing does not appeal, a cargo bicycle such as the Madsen can comfortably carry 250kg of shopping or children.

Bicycles designed to carry two children as passengers are common in mainland Europe, but were not legal for sale in Japan until two years ago. Since the ban was lifted, over 100,000 3-seater bicycles have been sold.

Every cycle insurance policy from the ETA covers against theft, accidental damage and vandalism – even at race events. It also includes third party insurance, bicycle breakdown recovery and worldwide cover. Get an instant online quote below.Fully-comprehensive cycle insurance
