A camera tripod for your bicycle handlebars or helmet

March 3, 2011

Cyclists who film their rides, including those urban commuters who want the reassurance of film evidence in the event of a road traffic collision with a vehicle, are being offered an increasing number of camera and mounting options for their bikes.

The £16 Flip Video Action Tripod features adjustable straps to attach it to bicycle handlebars or helmet to record video on the go and its mount is compatible with most lightweight cameras.

Why do bicycles need cameras?

The fact that motor insurance companies tell their customers to never admit liability in the event of a collision (even if they know they are responsible) is morally questionable and is well known to those who have tried to claim damages following a collision without the benefit of witness statements.

In a collision between a car and a bike, the cyclist clearly stands a higher chance of injury, which can make this an impossible task.

For this reason, the law in mainland Europe quite sensibly places the legal responsibility in personal injury cases involving car drivers and cyclists on the motorist – unless negligence on the part of the cyclist can be proved. Often referred to as ‘driver liability’ it is vociferously objected to by sections of the British press.

British law lagging behind

A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) said: “Until British law catches up with the rest of Europe and we get driver liability, we may have to rely on handlebar-mounted cameras to get fair treatment in the event of a collision.”

Cycle insurance that includes £1m third party insurance

Should you cause damage to another vehicle or person you are covered up to £5m by cycle insurance from the ETA. Every policy includes new-for-old replacement if your bike is stolen, cover for accidental damage (race events included), personal accident cover and worldwide cover. If you breakdown, they will even come out and recover you and your bike. From 33p per week.
