Car firm releases eco guidelines

July 22, 2009

Car manufacturer smart has launched a new eco driving scheme.

The firm has released a set of guidelines aimed at helping motorists save fuel – and money – while behind the wheel.

These tips include regularly checking tyre pressure, reducing speed by ten mph where it is safe to do so and turning off the engine when stationary for more than ten seconds.

Mike Linford, the company’s eco driving expert, said that as the cost of petrol rises, taking a "smart approach to driving has obvious economic benefits".

He added: "By learning how to get more out of a tank of fuel, motorists can make a difference to both their pocket and the environment."

Other tips offered by smart on how to cut your car’s emissions include turning off the air conditioning, planning journeys in advance and reducing a vehicle’s load.

The firm has also teamed up with Mercedes-Benz to offer green driving courses, which will begin later in the summer.

Recently, the government revealed plans to cut domestic transport emissions by 14 per cent in the next decade.
