Cities set for electric car charging points

September 11, 2009

Cities across Britain are set to have electric and hybrid vehicle charging points.

The plan to install re-charging points in Birmingham, Glasgow, Coventry, Milton Keynes, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Oxford and Sunderland was announced at the Low Carbon Vehicle Event 2009 as part of an £11 million scheme.

David Clark, chief executive of Energy Technologies Institute (ETI), said that enabling plug-in vehicles to compete with petrol and diesel models is a challenge, citing infrastructure as a major factor:“These plug-in vehicles are currently unknown to most consumers, who will want to know if they will be versatile, will they be affordable and will they be as easy to refuel.”

It is hoped that these charging points will one day form part of a natiowide network.
