Conservatives to stop speed camera spending

The Conservatives would stop government funding for new speed cameras if they came to power, the shadow transport secretary has announced.

Theresa Villiers revealed in a speech at the party’s convention that it would stop Labour’s "cash cow camera culture".

She declared: "Ladies and gentlemen, a Conservative government would not fund any new fixed speed cameras because they are not the best way to make our roads safer."

The shadow transport secretary added that this would mean that local councils would have to fund the implementation of any new cameras themselves, providing they could prove that they were the best route to take in cutting accidents.

She also stated that the party would not back expansion of London Heathrow Airport.

Ms Villiers commented that the travel hub needs to be "better, not bigger".

She added that the party will work on plans for high-speed rail networks if it comes to power.

The Conservative conference, which is taking place in Manchester, continues until the end of the week.
