Cycling socks that stay fresh for 14 days
December 15, 2016
They promise to be the stocking filler that cycle commuters everywhere will be hoping for: New high-tech socks that remain odour free after being worn for 14 days straight.
Human sweat comprises a mixture of water and salt (99%) and compounds of sugars and lipids (1%). When sweat is mixed with textiles, it creates a moist and warm environment for odour-causing bacteria.
These socks are treated with a compound containing tiny amounts of recycled silver, which is an excellent antimicrobial agent, to inhibit the growth of microbes and bacteria - it releases ions that attach themselves to the bacteria, incapacitating them and preventing them from reproducing. What all this means, according to the makers of the Brothers Socks, is that they can be worn during intense activity - such as cycling – over many days without them smelling badly. The silver compound is active only on the fabric and has no effect on skin’s natural bacterial flora. The particles are 100 times larger than nanoparticles and they are too large to penetrate the skin.
The merino wool mix socks have the added benefit of keeping your feet warm in winter and cool in summer.
Socks that don’t need washing so frequently have a benefit to the environment too as they reduce the use of energy, water and detergents.
