Cycling surge triggers bike theft concerns

Bike theft protection may be a wise investment for parents in Wales as the number of children cycling to school rises.

According to statistics from sustainable transport agency Sustrans, the number of children cycling to school in Conwy and Neath Port Talbot has trebled over the past year from 13 per cent to 39 per cent.

The hike is being attributed to the launch of cycle scheme Bike It, which has been set-up in schools across the country.

Now, Sustrans has extended the initiative to 12 schools in Cardiff and is hoping to achieve the same success in the city.

Jane Lorimer, Sustrans Cymru deputy director, said: "Our research in Neath and Conwy has shown that 57 per cent of children want to cycle to school, but nationally only two per cent actually do.

"We want to change that, and know that Bike It really works, so we are looking forward to bringing it to children in Cardiff and introducing them to all the benefits that cycling brings."

Do I need cycle insurance?
