Don’t risk your road trip – get short-term Euro breakdown cover before you go
February 12, 2025

Whether it’s pottering through the lavender fields of Provence, tackling the hairpins of the Stelvio Pass, or exploring Spain’s Atlantic coast, there’s nothing quite like a European road trip. But before you pack up the car or load the panniers on your motorbike, there’s one thing you shouldn’t leave home without: ETA short-term European breakdown cover.
You might well think, “what are the chances?” But as any seasoned road-tripper will tell you, when things go wrong, it's usually at the most inconvenient time and in the middle of nowhere.
For 35 years, the ETA has been offering breakdown cover that gets you back on the road with minimal fuss whether you're here in the UK or in Europe. With English-speaking helplines and 24/7 assistance, you’re never far from help. And at less than £20 for 5 days' cover, Euro breakdown is a small investment for peace of mind.
Bon voyage!
Rules of the (European) road
Driving in Europe isn’t just about mastering the art of driving on the right. Local rules can catch you out, and the fines are no joke. In France, for example, the speed limit on secondary roads is 80km/h – and they enforce it to the letter.
If your speedo’s in miles per hour, it’s worth switching it to km/h – most modern cars allow this. Alternatively, you can use stickers to mark key speeds. It’s an old-school fix, but it works.
Then there’s the Crit’Air sticker – required in 11 low-emission cities in France, including Paris and Lyon. It shows your vehicle’s pollution rating and costs just a few pounds, but if you don’t have one, you’re looking at a €68 on-the-spot fine.
Tips for a hassle-free trip:
- Get your paperwork in order – You’ll need your driving licence, insurance documents, and vehicle registration papers.
- Carry the right kit – Check local laws: For example, in France you need to carry a hi-vis jacket for every passenger.
- Don’t skimp on breakdown cover – With ETA’s short-term European breakdown cover, you’re covered for any mishaps, so you can enjoy the journey without worry.
