Laws on driving and cycling in France
April 8, 2024
The more you look out for it, the more you notice how many motorists use mobile phones illegally behind the wheel. The threat of six points plus a fine appears to be no deterrent.
The French take a slightly different approach. On top of a fine of €135 and penalty points, if the driver is committing another offence at the same time they risk a six-month ban.
Furthermore, use of any electronic screen other than a satnav brings with it a 1,500 euro fine, 3 penalty points and permanent confiscation of the device.
Headphone ban for all road users
Wearing an earpiece or earphones is prohibited for all motorists and cyclists in France. The offence is punishable by a fine of 135 euros and 3 penalty points. Kits integrated into cars or motorcycle helmets are exempt.
