E-bike battery recycling: When, where and how
January 10, 2025
E-bikes have transformed how we think about transport, offering a greener, healthier alternative to cars. But just like any piece of battery-powered tech, the power pack doesn’t last forever. How long your e-bike battery lasts and what happens to it at the end of its life are important questions for anyone looking to embrace this increasingly popular mode of transport.
The good news? With proper care, your e-bike battery could last far longer than you think.

How long do e-bike batteries last?
The life expectancy of an e-bike battery varies depending on several factors, from the quality of the battery to how well it’s been maintained. According to Wisper Bikes, some of their customers are still enjoying good performance from batteries that are a decade old. That’s impressive longevity, given many manufacturers quote five years, or up to1,500 charge cycles, as the average lifespan.
The key to a long-lasting battery is good care. Regular charging, avoiding extreme temperatures, and not letting your battery fully discharge too often can all help to extend its life. Treat your battery well, and it’ll treat you to years of reliable service.
Recycling: What happens when e-bike batteries die?
Eventually, even the best-cared-for batteries will reach the end of their life. When that happens, recycling is the responsible option – and it’s easier than you might think.
Specialist e-bike battery recycling firms are emerging to meet this need, although the industry is still in its infancy. For most riders, a more practical option is to take your old battery to a council-run Household Reuse and Recycling Centre, where they can be disposed of safely.
If that’s not convenient, high street stores like Halfords and Currys also accept e-bike and e-scooter batteries for recycling. These drop-off points make it simple for riders to do their bit for the environment and ensure that hazardous materials are disposed of responsibly.
Responsible e-bike battery disposal
E-bike batteries contain valuable materials like lithium and cobalt, as well as potentially hazardous chemicals. Recycling not only prevents these materials from ending up in landfill but also allows them to be reused in new products, reducing the need for mining and manufacturing.

With the popularity of e-bikes continuing to grow, the need for robust recycling infrastructure will only become more urgent. For now, riders can help by taking the time to recycle their batteries properly – it’s a small step that makes a big difference.
E-bikes are one of the most sustainable transport options available today, but they’re only as green as the practices that support them. By taking care of our batteries and disposing of them responsibly, we can ensure that e-bikes remain an eco-friendly choice for years to come.
So, next time you hop on your e-bike, spare a thought for the battery powering your journey. With a little care and attention, it could be with you for the long haul – and when its time does come, you’ll know exactly what to do.
Broken down on your e-bike?
It's an unfortunate fact of life; bicycles can break down. Even the shortest journey comes to an abrupt halt if you can't fix a flat tyre, broken chain or buckled wheel at the roadside. It's why 30 years ago we launched Cycle Rescue - the first breakdown cover policy for bicycles.
ETA Cycle Rescue covers e-bikes, too. If you ride a road-legal electric bicycle, we’ll cover it against mechanical faults, punctures or a flat battery.
How does Cycle Rescue cover work?
If you suffer a breakdown (including punctures, or even a flat battery) while out cycling, or are unable to continue due to an injury, our 24-hour Cycle Rescue team is on hand to arrange transport for you and your bicycle to a safe location.
Cycle Rescue costs only £24 per year with no hidden extras to pay if your bicycle suffers a breakdown.
