Electric cars must be “exciting”

May 21, 2009

The key to making electric cars a success is to make them exciting, according to American talk show host and car enthusiast, Jay Leno.

It is a view shared by the Environmental Transport Association (ETA). Increases in environmental awareness and the cost of fuel have not altered the fact that the appearance of a car is still a huge influence on its popularity – a fact that has not helped the popularity of electric cars, most of which place function over form.

The Aptera (pictured right), has been designed to be as aerodynamic as possible and this has resulted in its radical-looking, pear drop form.

A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) said: “The Aptera’s looks and performance are a glimpse of what electric cars can offer.”

What is the Aptera?

The Aptera Typ-1 is a sleek, electric three-wheeled vehicle, which is capable of travelling 100 miles on a single charge. Many electric cars are built using a petrol-powered car that has had its engine removed. The Aptera is no such compromise – it is designed as an electric vehicle from the ground up.

The 4,000 cars already ordered are expected to be delivered in the following eighteen months, the first of which by November 2009. Following that, around 10,000 of the cars will be produced each year – increasing to 100,000 if demand continues.

The Aptera ranges in price from £18,000-£28,000 depending on whether an electric, hybrid or petrol engine is specified.

Aptera is a contender for the $10 million X-Prize race to build the world’s first mass production-ready vehicle that exceeds 100 mpg.
