Fiat is greenest car maker in Europe

September 15, 2009

Fiat has beaten Peugeot-Citroen by a whisker to claim the title of cleanest car maker of the year 2008 – the average amount of CO2 emitted by the vehicles it sold in 2008 was 138g/km. Those sold by Peugeot-Citroen produced an average of 139g/km.

Car makers are being forced to build cleaner cars after a new European law setting binding targets for average CO2 emissions was agreed at the end of last year.

Cars are getting cleaner – white vans are next

A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) said: “The new emissions law is having a dramatic effect on the environmental performance of the cars available to buy and the EU is poised to announce a similar target for vans.”
