Folding cargo bikes for smarter urban living

We love the look of this prototype folding cargo bike by Barcelona-based Brau Cycles. We especially like the way the cargo platform over the front wheel doubles up as a dolly for wheeling the bike once its folded.

As more and more city dwellers discover the benefits of cargo bikes, folding designs like the Brau will find a willing market. After all, cargo bikes might be perfect for narrow streets but the larger and wider they are, the trickier they become to store in smaller houses and flats.

There's nothing new about the small-wheeled cargo bike, but recent design have done an amazing job of refining the concept. for example, the Tern electric-powered GSD may not fold, but it's beautifully conceived - a bike designed to carry two kids, a week’s worth of groceries or 180 kg of cargo while at the same time remaining narrow enough to wheel through a house if necessary.

'Cheap' cargo bikes

If the Tern is too expensive, how about the equivalent design courtesy of Decathlon, which retails for only £2,500 is France or this sub-£2,000 cargo bike built in the UK.
