Govt announces climate change plans

The government is looking to cut domestic transport emissions by as much as 14 per cent in the next ten years.

This is the target set out in the carbon reduction report published by Lord Adonis, the transport secretary.

He commented that there is a "long-term vision" for improvement in this area, saying that action must be taken to "safeguard the environment".

Lord Adonis added: "Transport accounts for a significant amount of our domestic emissions. Therefore decarbonising this sector has to be front and centre of efforts to meet our obligations and commitments to tackle climate change."

The document stated that it is hoped measures to address this issue will result in a saving of 85 million tones of carbon between 2018 and 2022.

Providing incentives for people purchasing electric and plug-in vehicles, using new technology in the freight and logistics sectors to help the measurement of emissions and working with European partners are among the suggestions made in the report.

Recently, the Sustainable Transport Cymru called for a "bold shift" in policy to tackle climate change.
