Hammocraft: A floating hammock for ultimate relaxation
May 11, 2016
Hammocraft is a simple device that allows you and up to four friends to doze peacefully in a hammock while floating on water.
The Hammocraft collapsible frame can be attached to an inflatable raft or two paddle boards, but the craft isn't intended to make long journey - its focus is very much messing around, and relaxing, on the water.
Hammocks have enjoyed a renaissance in recent years. In it’s purest form , the hammock remains a cheap, comfortable and lightweight way of setting up a bed more or less wherever you go, but in the latest designs combine this versatility of a hammock with the attributes of a multi-person tent.
This new generation of hammock / tent hybrid appear to be inspired by a spider’s web strung between trees. Being suspended in this way means your night's sleep is unlikely to be disturbed by uneven or soggy ground; an environmentally-benign temporary lodging sure to appeal to tree house lovers of every age.
Unfortunately, suspended tents can cost hundreds of pounds to buy. An expensive hammock seems to us a contradiction in terms so we were inspired to make our own multi-person hammock tent...
We first acquired a builder’s bag of the sort used to deliver a ton of sand, and which are designed to be discarded after use, and removed two of its sides. Next we used four ratchet straps to suspend the flattened sack between four sturdy trees. For the tent canvas we used an old shower curtain. Strong, cheap and cheerful, and most importantly, our upcycled hammock tent cost us less than £15.
