How to make big savings on your next e-bike
May 21, 2024
Here in the UK, e-bikes continue to be the only type of electric vehicle (EV) to benefit from absolutely no grants whatsoever. So it makes sense to find savings where you can.
The Cycle to Work scheme is a tax-free initiative that saves you money on a brand new bike; you side-step VAT and pay for the bike with a monthly fee directly from your salary before tax and NI deductions. Depending on your income tax bracket, you can save up to almost 50 per cent on the cost of a bike and accessories.
E-bikes are permitted under the scheme and there is no price cap.
Do I need insurance for my Cycle to Work bike?
Yes. Quite apart from all the benefits included in a good cycle insurance policy, if your bicycle is stolen, you're still liable for the remainder of your payments. Here at the ETA we insure many Cycle to Work bikes. It's quick and easy to get a quote, our policy is fully comprehensive and you can rest assured that you're in safe hands. After all, we're named the UK's most ethical provider by The Good Shopping Guide.

E-bike insurance
The ETA covers all road-legal electric bicycles as standard. If the output of your electric bicycle does not exceed 250 W/15.5 mph, we’ll cover it under our cycle insurance.
We also include Cycle Rescue as standard. If your e-bike develops a mechanical fault, or a flat battery, you can call on our breakdown team 24/7.
Every cycle insurance policy of ours includes the following as standard:
• Theft, accidental damage & vandalism
• E-bike battery theft cover
• Cycle Rescue (breakdown cover for your electric bicycle and you)
• No devaluation of your bike over time
• £2m third party PLUS £20,000 personal accident cover
• Shed and garage storage
• Low standard excess of 5% (£50 minimum)

How do I sign up to the Cycle to Work scheme?
If your workplace doesn't have a Cycle to Work scheme in place, it's a good idea to do a straw poll among your colleagues to gauge interest before approaching your employer. When you're ready, refer them to this Cycle to Work guidance published by the government.
There are quite a few companies that administrate Cycle to Work. For example, Green Commute Initiative is a social enterprise with a vision to get commuters out of cars and onto any kind of bike, with the dual purpose of improving both the individual’s health and wellbeing, as well as reducing the environmental impact of pollution and congestion from cars.
The ethical choice
The ETA was established in 1990 as an ethical provider of green, reliable travel services. Over 30 years on, we continue to offer cycle insurance, breakdown cover and mobility scooter insurance while putting concern for the environment at the heart of all we do.
The Good Shopping Guide judges us to be the UK's most ethical provider.
