London traffic lights to be turned green

August 19, 2009

Traffic lights in London will get an environmental makeover when they are replaced by a longer lasting and energy-efficient design.

Mayor Boris Johnson revealed that 3,500 traffic lights in London would be replaced by a design that uses energy-saving LEDs (light-emitting diode). LED lights have the added advantage of lasting ten times longer than conventional filament bulbs.

“Installing these eco-bulbs will cut the climate change emissions coming from London’s galaxy of traffic lights by more than half, as well as saving money from energy bills,” Mr Johnson said.

It is estimated that the new scheme will cut CO2 emissions by 600 tonnes and save Transport for London (TfL) £200,000 in energy bills.
