All the major manufacturers at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show are expected to showcase at least one hybrid concept cars, not least those that will be on their home turf.
Mercedes will exhibit the BlueZero E-Cell Plus, a plug-in hybrid which it claims is able to travel 62 miles on battery power alone.
The car’s range can be boosted to more than 300 miles thanks to a 67 bhp one-litre petrol engine
Mercedes has equipped the BlueZero E-Cell Plus with a lithium ion battery of the type used in fast-charging appliances such as laptops and cordless drills – it takes just over an hour to charge.

Advantages of hybrid cars
more fuel efficient than a conventional vehicle of the same type, reduced emissions and cheaper running costs, exempt from London Congestion Charge and no changes needed to your driving habits
Disadvantages of hybrid cars
Still relies on fossil fuels and therefore generates greenhouse gases and they cost more to buy than conventionally-powered cars
