Modular design is three bicycles in one
October 13, 2011
The Modus is an open-frame bicycle designed to receive a variety of clipped-in, purpose-built accessories including ‘a sleek briefcase for your everyday commute, a boom box for tunes while you ride, a lock or a battery pack to drive the bike in electric mode’.
The design is a product of Quirky, a social site dedicated to developing ‘crowd-sourced’ inventions.
It’s not clear whether the frame inserts are structural components without which the bike becomes unrideable, but such a design might prove an effective deterrent against theft.
Another week, another concept
The bicycle is a design of such simplicity that it has remained largely unchanged over the last 100 years, but this does little to deter inventors from coming up with alternatives. It doesn’t help that concept bicycles by their nature have to stand out from the crowd, a fact that invariably leads to the addition of unnecessary complexity.
