More relevant' driving test needed

Britons should take a driving test which involves a range of new elements, Graeme Trudgill, from the The British Insurance Brokers’ Association, has claimed.

He commented that there should be reforms in this examination, with "more relevant" additions;“There should be tests for hazard perception, situational judgement and attitudinal awareness as well as driving at night and in bad weather."

Cheaper car insurance for younger drivers

Young motorists will be able to save up to £500 on their car insurance by taking advanced driving lessons if the government implements a plan to encourage people to continue improving their driving skills throughout their lives.

Motorway driving and emergency braking at high speed will feature in the course, which will be developed by the Driving Standards Agency.

Newly-qualified drivers currently pay premiums of up to £2,000 a year. It appears likely insurance premiums will be reduced by about 25 per cent for drivers who have completed courses.

A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association said: “Additional training will be welcomed both by road safety camapigners and drivers themselves; with the average insurance premium for a new male driver at £1,200, anything that can reduce these costs is bound to be popular.”
