Nobody knows how many electric bikes there are in the UK. The Bicycle Association estimates around 550,000, while other sources put the figure almost four times higher.

However many e-bikes there are on UK roads, one thing is certain. The number is growing fast. And the question remains: What will happen to these cycles at the end of their lives? Their batteries will add to an anticipated 350,000 tonnes of end-of-life EV power packs that will need dealing with by 2040.

While it's possible to recycle the manganese, nickel, copper and cobalt in lithium-ion batteries, what about other e-bike components?

Ebike Freedom is a Glasgow-based Community Interest Company that provides e-bikes to disadvantaged individuals at an affordable price. They also run maintenance classes for low-income families and teenagers, and build custom e-bikes for people with disabilities.

When we replace our customers' damaged cycles we're left with salvage bikes. These can be stripped for parts and live on through initiatives like Ebike Freedom.
