Report calls for re-opened train lines
June 15, 2009
Train operators are calling for new rail lines to open in Britain, including some which were shut down more than 40 years ago.
A report by the Association of Train Operating has put the case for this forward, while also suggesting around 40 new stations.
The document stated 14 lines which could be opened, citing increased demand for services as the reason for this.
It is suggested that this would cost around £500 million and would involve re-opening lines closed by Dr Richard Beeching, author of the Beeching Report.
The plans would affect areas such as Leicester, Burton, Washington in Tyne and Wear, Brixham and Wisbech.
According to the report, around 40 towns which are not currently on the rail network could see their transport links boosted by the proposals.
