In the time it takes to read this sentence, 15 tyres will burst, 15,000 litres of fuel will be burnt and over 120,000 miles will be driven on Britain’s roads, according to the world’s first road statistic counter.

The launch of the online counter coincides with the great Easter getaway, the weekend each year during which millions of motorists take to the roads and tailbacks are as traditional as chocolate eggs

The true cost of driving

The road clock counter was devised by the Environmental Transport Association after it examined the driving habits of 800,000 motorists. It displays all manner of transport-related stats including miles driven, petrol and diesel consumed, bicycles stolen and where and when cars will break down each day.

The road clock counter reveals the astonishing amount of resources consumed, and pollution created, as a direct result of the way we travel each day.

On Britain’s roads today:

  • Tyres replaced: 85,000
  • Fuel used: 114,000,000 litres
  • Bicycles stolen: 1,300

The road clock predicts the following number of vehicle breakdowns will occur today in the following regions:

  • Southeast: 4727
  • Southwest: 1808
  • East Midlands: 661
  • West Midlands: 784
  • Northeast: 1031
  • Northwest 779
  • Wales 544
  • Scotland 782
