Safer cycling for women
February 10, 2012
The talk of improving conditions for cycling this week touched upon a troubling aspect of road safety for those on two wheels; the fact women account for a minority of cyclists, but are more at risk from lorries in London.
The question of why women in this country cycle less than men remains unanswered and whilst transport planners, cycling organisations and researchers have a number of theories, the issue has worrying implications for the future of cycling in Britain; adults who have never cycled are less likely to encourage their own children to use a bike. The question of why lorries in cities pose a disproportionately-high risk to women is even more perplexing. Some suggest that women are less aggressive in the way they position themselves around lorries at junctions – for this read that men are more inclined to place self-preservation above the letter of the law.
The ETA spoke to founder of cycle clothing-for-women brand AnaNichoola and keen racing cyclist, Anna Glowinski, for her five top tips on safer cycling.
