A sub-£2,000 e-cargo bike - and it's built in Britain
December 7, 2022
French sporting goods giant Decathlon has shaken up the e-cargo bike market with its D500, which sells for £3,500 here in the UK, but there's a homegrown alternative snapping at its heels.
The mycycle cargo bike starts at £1,999 for the entry level model, which boasts a range of 60km. To the basic specification you can add an impressive array of optional accessories as well as a battery upgrade that doubles the distance you can travel with power assist.
Although it's easy for a highly-specced mycycle cargo bike to come in at over £3,000, it costs less than the equivalent bike from Decathlon and the low entry price will be attractive to many.
Carrying young children by bike
They thought they'd solved the challenge of carrying kids by bicycle in 1951 by transforming a pram into a sidecar. While that particular idea didn't take off, bicycles remain one of the most joyful ways of travelling with children.
If an e-cargo bike is not an option for you, by far the simplest and most popular way of carrying kids by bike is a child seat fitted to the rear rack. However, on a standard bike it's not possible to carry more than one child in this way.
It's the reason sales of 3-seat electric bicycles are soaring in Japan as school-run drivers in congested cities like Tokyo leave their cars at home in favour of pedal power.
Here in the UK, an increasing number of parents are turning to cargo bikes as a cheap and environmentally friendly alternative to cars. Competitively priced e-cargo bikes will only help to boost this trend.
