Travelling with an e-bike
August 13, 2024
You don't need to tow a caravan to travel with your e-bike. Developments in battery performance means e-bike range increases by the year. For example, the latest Tern adventure cargo e-bike will do London to Paris on a single charge of its twin batteries.
People ride further by e-bike
It’s no exaggeration to say that e-bikes are revolutionising the world of cycling. Sales are on the up and it’s no surprise why. Boosting bicycles with an electric motor is the most rational application of EV technology. After all, unlike electric cars, an e-bike doesn’t need widespread charging infrastructure. You simply carry the battery inside and plug the charger into any household socket.
It’s one of the reasons people travel further by e-bike.

Can I put my e-bike on a plane?
Airlines won't allow you to carry lithium ion batteries over 100Wh, and the vast majority of e-bikes use power over this limit. Some e-bike manufacturers have taken a creative approach to this restriction by fitting two 100Wh batteries, which means these models can be carried on passenger aircraft.
Can I insure my e-bike against damage during travel?
Yes. ETA cycle insurance includes worldwide cover against theft and damage. You are also protected while your bike is on the care of rail operators, airlines or coach companies.
I carry my e-bike by motorhome, can I insure it?
Yes. We provide insurance for lots of people who travel by caravan, RV and motorhome with one or more e-bikes. Just make sure you use the appropriate lock to secure your e-bike while its attached to your bike carrier. If you store your e-bike inside your locked motorhome or caravan, it doesn’t need any further security. However, if it can be seen through a window, our policy requires that you cover it with something to keep it from view.
Carrying an e-bike on a cycle carrier
Whether you carry your e-bike on a roof rack or rear carrier, ETA cycle insurance protects against accidental damage to your bike.
Travelling by train with your e-bike
UK rail operators will allow you to bring your electric bike onboard and reserve a space as usual. However, most will not permit you to charge an e-bike on the train.
What happens if I get a flat battery?
We launched the UK's first Cycle Rescue service 30 years ago and include it with every cycle insurance we sell. Alternatively, we sell it as a standalone service for £24 per year. If your e-bike or electric cargo bike suffers a puncture, mechanical issue, or even a flat battery, we can send a recovery lorry to rescue you.
