A marriage of technologies old and new has given birth to the ultimate bicycle for the British wilderness.

The steel frame might be based on a classic 1930s butcher’s delivery bike, but the built-in USB charger and carbon Loop front wheel is very much twenty-first century.

Commissioned by TV chef and food campaigner Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, the Forager was built by Sven Cycles for cyclists that like to be self-sufficient. Rather than carrying a picnic, the Forager allows you to find, prepare and eat food as you go. Equipped with a selection of upcycled pots, pans, mushroom knives and barbecue you have everything you need to forage in style.

The distinctive wheel fitted to the front of the Forager is known as a Loopwheel, a design developed by Sam Pierce over four years that transforms any bike into a full-suspension bike.

A spring system between the hub and the rim of the wheel provides suspension, cushioning the rider from bumps and potholes .

Loopwheels have a conventional hub with a hub brake and hub gears, but the spokes are replaced by a carbon composite spring system that are claimed to give a smoother ride over rough surfaces than a conventional spoked wheel - ideal for the off road tracks at which the Forager is aimed.

Unlike suspended forks, Loopwheels provide tangential suspension: that is, they give 45 mm of travel in every direction. They respond to a force hit head-on in the same way as they do to a force from above or below.
