Unstealable bicycle uses its frame as a lock
August 29, 2014
It’s quite a claim to describe anything as ‘unstealable’, but three Chilean students have done just that with their 'Unstealable Bike' – and have two million YouTube views of their prototype design as a result.
The bicycle has a frame that can be used as a lock by wrapping it around a lamp post.
The seat post is removed and used to extend the reach of the opened frame - the theory is that by tampering with the bike, a thief would render it un-rideable.
If frame rigidity can be maintained without too much of a weight penalty, it’s an interesting idea. However, the weak point will remain the locking mechanism.

Even if this new design of bicycle lock proves to be unstealable, the market for conventional locks is likely to remain, not least because it is a concept that it not appropriate for many types of bike.
Insurance cover from most specialist providers in Britain is provided on the basis that you secure your bicycle with an adequate Sold Secure rated lock when leaving it in public. Sold Secure tests and rates cycle locks sold in Britain. Each lock model is graded as Bronze, Silver or Gold. The three levels represent how long it would take for a thief to break the lock. The higher the grading the higher, the greater the level of security provided by the product.
