Mobility scooters are a lifeline for over half a million people across the UK, offering independence and freedom. But whether you’re new to using one or a long-time rider, understanding the basics of servicing, insurance, and regulations can help you make the most of it. Here’s what you need to know.

Do I need to service my mobility scooter?

Much like a car, regular servicing keeps your mobility scooter running smoothly. A proper service should check and adjust brakes, tyres, and wheels, as well as inspect electrical connections and test the battery. Investing in routine maintenance helps prolong the life of your scooter.

Cost of servicing: Expect to pay between £50 and £150, depending on the work required. Always shop around for quotes to ensure a fair deal.

How do I identify my mobility scooter type?

If you’ve purchased a second-hand scooter, identifying its classification can be tricky. Here’s a quick guide:

Class 2 mobility scooters

Speed: Up to 4 mph.
Use: Pavements only (except where no pavement exists).
Registration: Not required.

Class 3 mobility scooters

Speed: 4 mph off-road, 8 mph on-road.
Use: Pavements and roads.
Registration: Required via the DVLA (forms V55/4 or V55/5).

If your scooter has a speed dial allowing adjustment up to 8 mph, it’s likely a Class 3 model.

Do mobility scooters need an MOT?

No, mobility scooters don’t require an MOT. However, class 3 models must meet certain standards, including working brakes, lights, indicators, a horn, and a rear-view mirror. Scooters used on dual carriageways must also display an amber flashing light.

Is insurance necessary for mobility scooters?

Insurance isn’t a legal requirement, but it’s highly recommended. A collision could leave you liable for damages or injuries, and insurance offers valuable peace of mind.

ETA mobility scooter insurance covers theft, damage, and 24/7 breakdown recovery, all for just £65 per year. Benefits include:

Up to £2 million personal liability cover.
Puncture repairs and key loss protection.
Replacement scooter hire if yours is damaged.

Can I buy mobility scooter insurance for someone else?

If you’re insuring on behalf of someone else, such as a parent or neighbour, the process is simple. Insurance from the ETA already represents great value at only £65 per year to cover a mobility scooter or powered wheelchair worth up to £3,500, but you can now buy the same policy to cover two people at the same address for only £90 per year - a saving of 30 per cent.

We allow you the option of insuring your mobility scooter or powered wheelchair for £3,500, £5,000. £7,500 or even £10,000. There's never been a better time to buy ETA mobility scooter insurance.

Can I use my mobility scooter in shops?

Yes, mobility scooters can be used in shops, and larger stores often accommodate users with accessible layouts or loan scooters. Legally, all shops must provide access, though narrow aisles can sometimes present challenges.

Are tandem mobility scooters legal?

Despite their convenience, tandem mobility scooters aren’t currently permitted on British roads or pavements. The Department for Transport defines mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs as “invalid carriages,” which are restricted to single-user designs under the Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act 1970.

What about tax and breakdown cover?

Tax: Mobility scooters are exempt from vehicle excise duty.
Breakdown cover: Mobility scooter breakdown cover is available and functions similarly to car recovery. ETA provides 24/7 recovery services for £39 annually, ensuring help is at hand whenever and wherever you need it.
