Zebra pops up in Essex
November 29, 2019
Another week, another school in desperate need of a safe crossing outside its entrance. Dunmow St May's School in Essex has been campaigning for a zebra crossing without success so this week we offered their protest a boost with our pop-up zebra crossing. Pupils were joined by a local councillor and two police officers as the inflatable crossing was snapped by the local press.
For the thousands of children who struggle each day to cross busy streets outside their schools, the streets can feel like a battleground. In the same week we were in Essex helping Dunmore St Mary's School, we heard from a local lollipop person with an account of their own experience.
"I am a lollipop lady outside a school in Essex. There is no help, i wrote down a number of a parked car on zigzags, the driver was so angry shouted out the window “if you write down my number again i will run you over you stupid bitch” I told my supervisor and she needed witness to do anything. i have no camera and no witness to hand, so i will be crossing children around parked cars.:0("
The pop-up zebra crossing has been designed to be installed on any road in less than a minute. Spokesperson at the Environmental Transport Association (ETA), Yannick Read, said: “The idea may be tongue-in-cheek, but the issue is deadly serious; with over 2,000 children killed or seriously injured each year on our roads, parents should never have to battle to have a genuine crossing installed.”
