Bike theft alert

Northern Constabulary is warning people to take extra measures to avoid falling victim to bike theft over the festive period.

According to the organisation, many people are expected to have bicycles at the top of their Christmas lists this year but unfortunately so will many thieves.

Responding to the expected rise in bike thefts, crime prevention officers have compiled a list of bike theft protection steps cyclists can take.

Officers advised bike riders to ensure that they lock their bicycles to an immovable object out of public view and avoid dimly lit places.

In addition, Northern Constabulary also encouraged people to make use of bike stands and secure removable parts.

A spokesperson said: "If yours is a very expensive bike, don’t lock it in the same place on a regular basis so it won’t be noticed and stolen to order.

"It may seem like there are lots of things to think about when locking your bike, but once you get into the habit you will be able to lock your bike within seconds and it will be well worth the trouble."

Do I need cycle insurance?

The short answer is yes. Bikes are vulnerable to theft and in the case of an accident you may need to seek compensation or even deal with a claim by someone else. Cycle insurance from the ETA includes new-for-old replacement, third party insurance, personal accident cover and if you breakdown, they will even come out and recover you and your bike.
