Insurance for Cycle to Work bikes
May 4, 2023
The Cycle to Work scheme will be 25 next year, so if you've yet to take advantage of this popular tax-free initiative that allows cyclists to make significant savings on the cost of a bike, and spread payments over time, what better time than now?
How much will Cycle to Work save me?
You pay for the bike with a monthly fee directly from your salary before tax. Depending on your income tax bracket, you can save between 32-42% on the cost of your bike and accessories.
The scheme refers to these payments as hire costs you're paying your employer. At the end of this hire period, you can buy the bike from your employer - usually for nominal fee.
Do I need insurance for my Cycle to Work bike?
Yes. Quite apart from all the benefits included in a good cycle insurance policy, if your bicycle is stolen during the 'hire period' of the scheme, you're still liable for the remainder of your payments. Here at the ETA we insure many Cycle to Work bikes - it's quick and easy to get a quote, our policy is fully comprehensive and you can rest assured that you're in safe hands; we're named the UK's most ethical provider by The Good Shopping Guide.

How do I encourage my employer to get involved in the Cycle to Work scheme?
It's a good idea to do a straw poll among your work colleagues to gauge interest before approaching your employer, but when you're ready refer them to this Cycle to Work guidance published by the government.
What kind of bike can I get (and how much can I spend)?
The Cycle to Work scheme isn't too prescriptive about the type of bike you buy to choose to commute on. E-bikes are permitted and there isn't a price cap applied - although you'll have to check whether your employer wants to apply a limit.
