One million more UK adults choose walking, wheeling and cycling
May 1, 2024
Busy lives make it feel hard to find time for anything - let alone exercise. Sport can be tough to commit to. It's why gyms are able to bank on good intentions rather than people actually turning up to use the equipment.
Luckily, walking, wheeling and cycling are easy to incorporate into everyday life, however busy you are. And better still, they cost very little.
Perhaps that explains why one million more adults are getting active on a regular basis than in 2016. This is despite the impacts of the pandemic and increased cost of living pressures.

National Active Travel Commissioner, Chris Boardman, said: “Today’s Active Lives figures show that, year-on-year, one million more adults are choosing walking, wheeling and cycling as a way to get from A to B. The nationwide investment that is being put into delivering high-quality routes is paying off."
"By enabling more people to build activity into their daily lives we’re making the nation healthier, happier and greener. It’s a win-win for us all.”
As part of our crowdfunded documentary about road harm reduction, we spoke to Chris Boardman about the need for active travel.
