Pedal-powered ragtop: A roof for your bicycle
June 30, 2011
What better time than Wimbledon fortnight to invest in a roof for your bicycle?
The annual tennis championships are widely acknowledged to be a thinly-disguised rain dance that brings wet weather to all parts of the country, but cyclists who invest in a Veltop need not fear the inevitable downpours.
The Veltop bicycle roof system promises to protect against cold, rain and sun and can be retro-fitted to almost every conventional or electric bicycle.
The simple design comprises a windscreen, universal fixing, two lightweight spars and a water-resistant hood with roll-down windows.
Prices start from £245.
Sometimes it rains
A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) said: “The trouble with fairings on bicycles is that they add weight and can behave like an unhelpful sail in windy conditions. Modern waterproof fabrics do an impressive job of keeping you dry while allowing your skin to breath. During the summer months the low-tech and cheap alternative is to make the most of the fact that you yourself are waterproof and embrace the occasional soaking – just don’t forget to carry a change of clothes.”
Are you covered?
Cycle insurance from the ETA covers against theft, vandalism and accidental damage (even at race events) and includes third party insurance, personal accident cover and bicycle breakdown cover.
