Looks like a car, but rides like a bicycle

Bicycle styled as Cadillac

The latest human-powered vehicle (HPV) from America is unlike any other bicycle that has come before it; the car/bike hybrid is based on a 1959 Cadillac Eldorado and sacrifices any attempt at efficiency or speed in return for traffic-stopping style.

The Cadillac-shaped bike was built for Specialized as a one-off creation for the Las Vegas Cycle Show, but has since prompted interest from cyclists and car lovers alike.

A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) said: “Their practicality aside, cars have such powerful cultural significance that it is notoriously difficult to convince people to occasionally leave them at home in favour of cleaner and healthier alternatives – the cadillac-shaped bicycle is just a bit of fun, but perhaps electrically-assisted car/bike hybrids may become city vehicles of the future.”

What is an HPV?

The term human-powered vehicle (HPV) usually refers to a type of bicycle that has been modified for peak efficiency and occasionally outright speed. Riders sit in recumbent position, enclosed in streamlined bodywork. The speed record for a human-powered vehicle of this type is over 80mph.

Win your own pimped bicycle

Cyclists who ask for an instant online quote for insurance are being offered the opportunity to win the most luxurious folding bicycle in the world; ilovemybike.co.uk is giving away a one-off, 24ct-gold bike.

The bike started life as a stock Brompton S2L, which was stripped down, polished, plated in copper and finally covered in 24ct gold (the plating company that undertook the work uses small artisanal mines in order to minimise its environmental impact).

At no extra cost, every cycle insurance policy from ilovemybike.co.uk includes new-for-old replacement and accidental damage (race events included), third party insurance, personal accident cover and if you breakdown, they will even come out and recover you and your bike (this service alone costs £35 a year when bought separately).

To enter the draw to win the gold Brompton, simply get an online quote using the button below – it takes less than a minute and there in no obligation to buy.
