My mobility scooter has been damaged
November 22, 2023
With over 350,000 mobility scooters on UK streets, there's bound to be the odd bump and scrape. However, according to government research, over 20 per cent of mobility scooter users have experienced an accident or incident that made them feel unsafe.
What should I do if I'm involved in an accident on my mobility scooter?
1. Be safe
Get yourself out of the road and to a footpath, kerbside or somewhere safe if you can. If you are unable to move, ensure you are visible and try to attract help from passers-by.
2. Call 999
If you're injured call an ambulance, and if a motorist is involved ask for the police too as they can help with exchange of details and their reports could prove crucial. Take down the details of the attending police officer and an incident reference number.
3. Exchange details
This one is important. You may not have insurance cover yourself, but all motor vehicles on a public road should do. Get names and addresses, vehicle registration number as well as make, model and colour.
4. Ask for witnesses
Get details of any independent witnesses as well as the driver of the vehicle that hit you (if applicable). If you can’t do this yourself, ask a passer-by for help.
5. Take photos
Take photos on your phone of the vehicles involved and the scene (from junctions, road markings or signs) precisely as the crash occurred. Do not let the driver of the vehicle that hit you move it before you take photos. Ask the police if there is CCTV footage showing your collision.
6. Put it down on paper
When you get home, write a full account of the incident and draw a sketch. It's worth asking for a copy of the police reports too.
7. See your doctor
No matter how minor your injuries may seem, always visit your GP and get checked over at the earliest possible opportunity.
8. Keep all receipts
Keep receipts/bills/estimates for the cost of repair/replacement to your mobility scooter, clothing and accessories as well as a record of any costs you incur for treatment, travel to medical appointments or lost earnings.
9. Call our claims team
