What causes cars to break down in winter?
January 16, 2025
When days are short and temperatures low, the last place you want to be is stranded at the roadside. Unfortunately, winter takes its toll on vehicles so breakdowns become more likely. Analysis of over one million breakdown cover policies revealed the top ten reasons for vehicle breakdowns.
From dead batteries to engine faults, breakdowns occur for a multitude of reasons. Here’s what the data shows about the most frequent culprits:
'Dead on key' (30.27%) The single most common cause of vehicle breakdowns is a car that simply won’t start. Older batteries are particularly vulnerable during colder months when freezing temperatures sap their strength. Add the extra strain of powering lights, heaters, and wipers, and it’s little wonder so many cars fail to start on icy mornings. Regular battery checks and keeping jump leads handy can help.

Engine cut out, won’t start (8.11%) When the engine unexpectedly cuts out and refuses to restart - especially frustrating on long journeys or during commutes.
Flat tyre – no spare (7.50%) Punctures are an unwelcome winter woe, worsened by icy roads and hidden debris. Modern cars often come without a spare tyre, leaving drivers reliant on repair kits that don’t always do the job.
Engine turning over, not firing (7.48%) Few sounds are as frustrating as an engine that turns over but refuses to start. Common causes include fuel system blockages or ignition faults, often exacerbated by freezing weather.
Loss of power (3.49%) A sudden loss of power can be dangerous, particularly on motorways.
Engine management light on (3.32%) Engine management lights provide an early warning sign of trouble.
Clutch fault (2.55%) A failing clutch can make gear changes difficult or impossible, leaving you unable to drive.
Gearbox/clutch fault (2.49%) Similar to clutch issues, problems with the gearbox can leave your car undriveable.

Overheating (1.85%) It may seem counterintuitive in winter, but engines can still overheat due to cooling system failures. Regular maintenance, such as checking coolant levels and adding the correct ratio of anti-freeze, can reduce the risk.
Flat tyre - no jack (1.49%) Even when a spare tyre is available, many drivers find themselves without the tools to replace it. Whether it’s a missing jack or a stuck wheel nut, having roadside assistance makes all the difference - especially in winter.
