The ETA is the world’s fastest bicycle; a bullet-shaped design that this month scooped first place in the World Human-Powered Speed Challenge when it clocked 89.59 mph.
The world's fastest bicycle is an embodiment of ingenuity, athleticism and determination. At 25 kg, the ETA is at least twice as heavy as the bicycles most of us ride, but unlike the average MTB, hybrid or road bike, it benefits from fully enclosed bodywork with drag more than 100 times less than that of the most streamlined cars. The shape of the ETA is so critical that cameras do away with the need for a window that would compromise the aerodynamic properties of its bodywork.
Every element of the design has been optimized for speed - from low-drag bearings to the world’s best handmade tyres - and its complexity is plain to see with the bodywork removed.
The ETA was built by Aerovelo, a group devoted to building incredible human-powered vehicles. Founders Todd Reichert and Cameron Robertson created a pedal-powered ornithopter before devoting themselves to the creation of a human-powered helicopter. Aerovelo’s human-powered helicopter Atlas flew for over 60 seconds at an altitude of 3.3 metres to win the Sikorsky Challenge and its $250,000 prize.

ETA cycle insurance
We're proud to share our name with the Aerovelo record-breaking bicycle, but we can't claim any association beyond that. We're experts in cycle insurance, and while we don't hold any speed records, we do have two Guinness World Records and a rating as Britain's most ethical insurer to our name.
One cycle insurance policy might seem identical to the next, but the devil is the detail. How much excess you will be charged is just one of the things that varies wildly between providers. Another is so called ‘new-for-old’ replacement – many insurers use the term, but if your bicycle is more than a few years old, devalue it severely leaving you out of pocket when you come to replace it.
ETA cycle insurance has a low standard excess of 5% (minimum £25) and offers a new-for-old for life – however old the bike, if it’s stolen you get enough to buy a new model.
We never devalue bikes no matter their age, allow you to buy your replacement bike wherever you like, replace stolen quick release components and handle claims in-house.
